Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) has announced a $17.8 million investment from the Ministry of Education to build a new growth school in Port Elgin.
The new school will host 409 students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6 and comes as part of the Ministry's Capital Priorities Program. School boards from the province were invited to submit proposals to address accommodation needs and in consultation with community and municipal partners, BWDSB recognized Saugeen Shores as having the greatest need.
Lisa Thompson, MPP for Huron-Bruce said the investment will provide modern, state-of-the-art facilities to support student learning and growth.
Jill Dunlop, Minister of Education said that in addition to the new Port Elgin school, increased funding, staffing and a "back-to-basics focus on reading, writing and math" will help ensure students graduate with the fundamental skills they need to succeed.
Jane Thomson, BWDSB Chair said they were pleased and excited to receive the news from the province. "Our staff have been diligently working to ensure a successful outcome for this business case application, and we are so appreciative of their efforts, along with the support of our community and municipal partners," Thomson said, adding a "thank you" to MPP Thompson and the Ministry for recognizing the need in Port Elgin.
Further details will be provided as the information becomes available.
